Assistant Vice President for Development

Overview 

The Pontifical Mission Societies of the U.S. seeks an Assistant Vice President for Development who shares our vision of building the Church through the work and witness of mission priests, religious, and other missionaries.  The AVP for Development is an integral part of TMPS. In collaboration with other stakeholders, he/she will direct, manage, and coordinate the organization’s comprehensive development programs. The AVP will assist in recruiting, developing, mentoring, and leading a team of four (4) development services professionals focused on increasing philanthropic support for the Pope’s missions, as well as enhancing the organization’s reputation, resources, and relationships. The AVP will ensure that staff are motivated, focused, and supported in their work, fostering a culture that brings out the best in each member of the staff, supports individuals in their professional development, and reinforces the value of teamwork toward achieving ambitious goals.

This is a full-time position located in St. Petersburg, Florida. 

Reporting Relationships

The AVP for Development reports to the Vice President for Advancement and Development.

Responsibilities 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with the VP for Advancement, manage a growing, comprehensive fundraising program including the supervision of annual, leadership annual, planned, and major giving and the execution of the World Mission Sunday second collection;
  • Oversee advancement operations functions including fundraising program evaluation, major gift infrastructure, donor stewardship, Virtuous constituent database, and prospect research;
  • Establish and oversee a comprehensive moves management system that includes building development portfolios, supporting the VP for Advancement and Regional Gift Officers in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors, and ensuring that processes are in place that provide a healthy pipeline of prospective donors;
  • Establish and lead a leadership annual giving program, with a portfolio of 80 prospects.
  • Provide leadership in building an institutional culture of philanthropy, implementing a strategic plan for philanthropy, creating a communication plan for philanthropy, and strengthening the infrastructure to support philanthropy at TMPS;
  • Assess donor cultivation and solicitation activities and provide training, guidance, and motivation to increase the frequency and effectiveness of donor and prospect interactions and donor engagement activities;
  • Partner in the creation of an overall fundraising plan for the organization, ensuring implementation, monitoring, tracking, and evaluation towards key performance indicators;
  • Assist in the creation and updating of processes and policies related to giving and fundraising activities; and,
  • Support events as directed by the Vice President for Advancement and Development.

Additional Job Functions:

  • Serve as a partner and resource to diocesan mission office directors and staff in support of their annual appeals, donor stewardship, and identification of major gift prospects.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a mission-driven team player with

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience leading advancement programs and teams, with demonstrated success in securing gifts ($25K+) from individuals. 
  • Experience utilizing moves management techniques and prospect research.
  • Advanced knowledge of gift transaction components and gifting vehicles, including stock transfers, estate, and life-income gifts.
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated use of CRMs, internet-based research, Windows, Microsoft Applications, including MS Word and Power Point.
  • Experience in Direct Mail Marketing and Annual Appeals preferred.
  • Strong professional integrity and grounding in philanthropy with an understanding of legal and ethical implications of fundraising.
  • Experience with DonorSearch, WealthEngine or other prospecting tools preferred.
  • Demonstrated project management and decision-making ability with excellent time-management skills.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Practicing Catholic.

Regional Director of Diocesan Relations – Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern Regions

The RD for Diocesan Relations is an integral part of TMPS. In collaboration with other stakeholders, he/she will direct, manage, and coordinate the organization’s comprehensive outreach to (Arch)Dioceses within one of five regions. The RD will assist in the recruitment, development, mentorship, and leadership of Diocesan professionals focused on increasing outreach and support for the Pope’s missions and enhancing the organization’s reputation, resources, and relationships.

Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with the Vice President for Regions, manage a growing, comprehensive outreach program at the diocesan level to raise awareness of the needs of mission territories, and, specifically, to support the Pontifical mandate to support the Mission Societies.
  • Provide leadership in creating structure and best practices in promoting the Pontifical Mission Societies within the diocesan structure.
  • Engage diocesan staff in methods of owning commitment to the missions.
  • To remain current with missiology and mission initiatives in order to instruct and support the faithful in developing practical spiritual and corporal works for promoting the 1,100 most under-resourced dioceses around the world.
  • To be a proficient resource in how to best animate the execution of the annual World Mission Sunday month, as well as to substantially increase the overall participation in contributing to this major second collection.
  • Oversee diocesan operations and assess performance of diocesan directors vis-à-vis protocols and guidelines from the National Office.
  • To create a trusting and collaborative relationship with diocesan directors that includes healthy and frequent communication, transparency, and a disposition of service and support for the sake of the missions.
  • To become efficient with documenting communication with and support provided to diocesan directors through the TPMS CRM system.
  • Communicate regularly with the VP of Regions to keep him/her abreast of ways to best support diocesan directors and to strategize in removing any logjams.
  • Provide leadership in building an institutional culture that represents a commitment to promoting the Pontifical Societies based on TPMS values.
  • Assess needs and opportunities within each (arch)diocese in the assigned region and provide training, guidance, and motivation to increase the effectiveness of diocesan directors as the primary promoters of the Pontifical Societies within their assigned (arch)diocese.
  • Partner in the creation of an overall plan for excellence in the development of mission outreach for the organization, ensuring implementation, monitoring, tracking, and evaluation of key performance indicators.
  • Assist in the creation and updating of processes and policies related to efficient and effective partnership with diocesan efforts within their assigned region on behalf of the missions.
  • Be proactive in creating a strong “Call to Action” in awareness and support of the missions.
  • Support events and other activities as directed by the Vice President of Regions.

Staff Accountant – Hybrid/Remote

We seek a Staff Accountant who shares our vision of building the Church through the work and witness of mission priests, religious, and other missionaries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining financial reports, records, and general ledger accounts.
  • Enforce internal control and comply with policies and procedures.
  • Recording financial transactions including bank deposits, cash receipts, outgoing checks and eft’s, interest received, and credit card payments.
  • Reconcile credit card transactions.
  • Preparing journal entries, ACH payments, and assisting with monthly close processes.
  • Maintaining documentation for accounts payable, purchasing, and treasury and conducting internal audits.
  • Preparation of fixed asset journal entries and reporting.
  • Prepare accruals, assist in AR & AP as directed by the Accounting Manager.
  • Research and resolve straightforward accounting discrepancies and irregularities in a timely manner. Elevate more complex issues for resolution.
  • Performing monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Contributing to the development and review of annual operating budget.
  • Meeting processing and reporting deadlines.
  • Participate in the year-end audit annual financial statement audit by helping prepare audit schedules and information requests.
  • Ensuring compliance with GAAP.
  • Backup to clerical staff and other office duties as required.
  • Additional ad hoc responsibilities as requested.

Desired Skills and Experience
